Iowa Farm to School and Procurement
Recorded on April 23, 2018 - This webinar provides an overview/introduction of the Iowa Farm to School Program created by legislation passed in 2007 and coordinated by Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS). IDALS will provide information on Iowa Local Food Day with information on participation and mini-grant requirements, the Iowa Farm to School Local Purchase Report, Farm to School Directory, and Farm to School resources. The webinar also reviews federal small purchase threshold, local purchase threshold, and procurement methods, the Buy American Provision, and geographic preference. The five basic steps to procure local foods using either the micro-purchase or small purchase method is discussed. USDA and State resource list including Iowa State University Extension’s On-Farm Food Safety Good Agricultural Practices guide and the Purchasing of Local Produce checklist is provided. The webinar concludes with listing upcoming school meal program training events including the Iowa Farm to School Conference.
